Summer Feedback for the Council (Internal)

Hi!

I would like to have a feedback about the council activities so far and more importantly, a word ot two about your expectations and experience with the managing team of the SciTech Council.

It will help me in planning out activities and "fine tuning" myself to be able to coordinate with you better.

Please mail me with your two cents. In case you want to give anonymous feedback please leave a anonymous comment on this blog (http://scitech-iitk.blogspot.com/)

Thanks for participating in this exercise.

Saumya.

  • Let the council span more departments rather than just concentrating on Mech, Elec, Comp and Aerospace. Moreover, the work that is done in the clubs is ..well, let me say "fraud" ..barring a very few exceptions. Why not involve the people in something innovative and frame the club activities so that it is a preparation for a bigger event(Techkriti off course, and may be events in the other colleges).I know these things must be a repetition and that most of the things might already be in your mind. But we do hope that you execute them rather than just thinking about it.

There could be general fortnightly sci tech quizzes instead of holding them only once a year(in Takneek). There could be questions thrown and prizes kept ( may be just a chocolate or two) for those who solve them . Sometimes they can be department specific sometimes general.

One more thing that i would like to say is that try to target the people other than 1st and 2nd year.If you can find an audience in 3rd, 4th year, Mtechs and Phds then it won't take time for sci tech club to flourish. There can be seminars about the current research going on in which the Mtech and PhD people can participate widely. Then there can be talks given by the 4th year people about the areas in which they are working because you already know how confused the undergraduates are about the choices they should make. To add fuel to the hostel rivalries you can have an interhostel technical competition and give a variety of problems. This would in turn lead to an intra hostel competition.

I know it is very easy to say and very difficult to execute but I am quite hopeful that at least something will be done to improve the situation. We very well know that there is no dearth of money so that should not be a problem. But I really think that involving senior students like MTechs and PhD's will do good.

All the best for your endeavours. Give us a good techkriti! :)

P.S.: I am sorry that the first comment here has to be anonymous but i dont feel like revealing the name here...In case I get any idea, i will bug you again :)

  • @ anonymous : Gee, thanks for your feedback! Really nice points there.

The aim of the clubs is always to get people involved, but you see, there is a very big problem that plagues almost every activity in campus these days. Its not that efforts are not made in involving people, it that the people themselves do not come forward for participation.

For example, there is a specific mindset that coordinators can only be from third year undergrads, which is reflected in the applications I received when I called for nominations. It was rather nice to have some postgraduate junta coming up for various responsibilities this time round and I think the council absorbed them very well.

Another issue about activities like the quizzes etc.. Good point. I guess I can discuss this with the coordinators to come up with volunteers to conduct this.

About the expanding the scope of club activities, I would say it is a good idea, however, I would rather concentrate right now on "de-frauding" (as you put it) the current set-up and maybe pass on this vision to my successor. Things like these will take time to develop, they just cannot be done in a single tenure. We should however try to chart out a development path.

I assume that you are not a part of the council, and thus would be happy to know that we are already on the road to acheive more professionalism and output from the Council's Clubs.

As a closing note, I would reiterate the basic problem is to get people to handle things, for lately I have been getting this feeler from quite a lot of places that the General Secretary should be orgainising this, and conducting that. See it is perfectly fine to expect me to plan these events and no doubt, there IS NO dearth of money for an idea well presented. However, for every event I plan, I need active and involved participation from the junta to take it up as their own initiative as well as responsibility, both in orgainising and competing in these events. If the student community is able to bring out volunteers for conducting these activities, frankly speaking, the need for a General Secretary would not be felt.

Once again, thanks a ton for spending time and putting up these points. Some of them were really nice ones, and frankly there were some repetitions, but not all. Two heads is definitely better than one.

Thanks again for your feedback, and I am looking forward to be bugged by you again!
